About -
Richard Gent is a Level 3 Advanced Fitness Instructor,
Personal Trainer & experience Martial Arts Coach, specialising
in the awesome ring sport of Muay Thai (Thai Boxing).
Richard began his sporting career at the tender age of 5
in a style of Karate similar to Kyokushinkai. Richard was no
natural in the sport, but though hard work and determination
he earned his 1st Degree Black belt after 6 years of training.
He continued to train in various Martial Arts and in 1997 was
introduced to Thai boxing. In 2000 the gym where he trained relocated to
a full time premises and Richard began teaching a few general martial arts classes per week. Despite many years of martial arts training, Richard felt he lacked the underlying knowledge required to advise his students on the health, fitness and nutrition side of the demanding world of combat sports and so started studying and researching all aspects of this fascinating subject.
Richard changed tact for a couple of years in 2002 whilst undertaking an HNC in Business Management to help him in his career as the manager of a theatre supplies and production company. However, shortly after completing his HNC, Richard got the fitness bug again and decided to study for his Level 2 gym instructors certificate. He easily completed and passed the course and, temporarily satisfied, continued to teach a few classes per week whilst concentrated on developing his career.
In 2007 things began to change. Don Heatrick, a friend and training partner of Richards got selected to represent England at the WMF World amateur Muay Thai championships and Richard decided to assist Don in his preparations. Using their combined knowledge Richard and Don devised a training schedule designed specifically for the rigours of the tournament.
Soon, other club members joined them on the sessions and so, once the championships were over, Richard and Don spent time coaching and advising fighters for upcoming competitions.
In 2008, the gym Richard trained and taught in closed down. Keen to continue teaching and training, Richard and Don formed a partnership and opened Bury St Edmunds Thai boxing in August 08. The gym has gone from strength to strength, click here for more details.
All was going well, however, running the club was clashing with Richards full time
job. In 2009 Richard decided to make a career out of health and fitness and so again
returned to studying and completed his Level 3 Advanced Fitness and Personal Trainers
certificate. Soon after completing, he gained a licence to offer Personal Training
within the Abbeycroft Leisure Centres in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds. After gaining
industry experience working from the leisure centres, Richard and Don decided to
combine their resources and solve premises issues for their Thai boxing gym -
